About This Card
This card summarizes the installation of the modular tape subsystem and highlights
important procedures you need to perform after installing the subsystem or after
replacing a cartridge tape drive.
Install the Cleaning Cartridge Before Operating the ACL
If the subsystem or replacement cartridge tape drive contains an automatic cartridge
loader (ACL), you must install the cleaning cartridge. This must be done immediately
after installation but before operating the ACL. See “Installing the Cleaning Cartridge
in the ACL” in Section 3 of the 5190/5194 Modular Tape Subsystem Manual.
Installation Summary
If you plan to install the modular tape subsystem yourself, review the following
installation steps. Then be sure to read Sections 1, 2, and 3 of the 5190/5194 Modular
Tape Subsystem Manual.
1. Prepare for installation of the subsystem by arranging for service clearance and
locating a power source.
2. Using two people, unpack the modular tape subsystem.
3. If you plan to use an MFC, install the MFC RS-232/SCSI BIC in the host system.
4. If you plan to use a 3216 tape controller, install the 3216 logic board and BIC.
5. If you plan to use a ServerNet addressable controller (SAC), the PMF CRU or
IOMF CRU, which contains the SAC, is preinstalled in the host system.
6. If you plan to use a 6760 ServerNet device adapter, install the 6760 adapter with a
6761 F-PIC or 6762 S-PIC.
7. Perform one of the following configuration tasks (described in Section 2):
For Himalaya K-series servers, perform one of the following:
Use COUP to add the subsystem to your system configuration.
Modify the CONFTEXT configuration file in the host system and run the
Install program, including SYSGENR, to create the new operating system
image (OSIMAGE).
For Himalaya S-series servers, use SCF to add the subsystem to your system
configuration.
8. Connect the subsystem to the host system. For subsystems that attach to an MFC,
PMF CRU, IOMF CRU, or 6762 S-PIC, this includes connecting and routing a SCSI
cable (you must use a SCSI cable for attaching to a PMF CRU or IOMF CRU). For
subsystems that attach to a 3216 tape controller or 6761 F-PIC, this includes
installing the back-end board (BEB) and connecting and routing a fiber-optic cable.
