The primary uses a 
different address to 
communicate with each 
secondary station. 
Each secondary station 
uses only one address.
Each combined 
station has two 
addresses. The local 
primary substation 
has the same address 
as the remote 
secondary substation, 
and vice versa.

In standard line control modes (NRM, ARM, or ABM), the address field is 1 byte long.
In extended modes (NRME, ARME, or ABME), the address field can be up to 4 bytes
long. You define the length of the field at system generation, through the
Communications Management Interface (CMI), or in the configuration block through a
(1) SET CONFIGURATION request from the application. You assign addresses to
stations as follows:
For a point-to-point or multipoint link, you assign addresses with an application
request (DEFINELIST).
For an ABM link, you assign the primary substation address with an application
request (DEFINELIST) and the secondary substation address at system generation,
through CMI, or in the configuration block with an application request (SET
CONFIGURATION).
