REQUESTS AND FUNCTIONS APPLICABLE TO DISCONNECTED STATE. The
following requests are permitted in DISCONNECTED state. Some
requests have different functions when the line is in other
states. For complete descriptions of the requests, see
Section 3.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

SET CONFIGURATION, to change line parameters. This request
is permitted only in DISCONNECTED state. It does not cause
a change of state.

FETCH CONFIGURATION, to retrieve line parameters. This
request does not cause a change of state.

FETCH STATISTICS, to retrieve line quality and usage data.
This request does not cause a change of state.

WRITE DATA, to establish a connection, if required;
to make a line bid and send the first message. The line
state when the request completes successfully is WRITE.

READ DATA, to establish a connection, if required;
to receive the ID of the remote station, as part of ID
exchange; to acknowledge a line bid and read the first
message. The line state when the request completes
successfully is READ.

WRITEREAD DATA, to establish a connection, if required;
to initiate ID exchange and read the ID of the remote station;
to reply to the station that initiated ID exchange and to read
the response; to make a line bid, send the first message, and
accept a conversational reply. If you use the request for ID
exchange, the new state is CONTROL. If you use it to send a
message and receive an acknowledgement, the new state is
WRITE. If you use it to send a message and receive a text
reply, the new state is READ.

CONTROL, to establish a connection. The state changes to
CIRCUIT ASSURANCE if the line requires ID exchange;
otherwise, the state changes to CONTROL.

SETMODE, to change the retry count or the block length for
transparent text. This request does not cause a change of
state.

ABORT, to stop a request in progress, for example, a CONTROL
or WRITEREAD request. The aborted request stops abruptly.
Any work that request has already accomplished remains in
effect; no work is undone. The line remains in the state
in which the work was interrupted.
