Migrating a Database From a NonStop
K-Series System
Ideally, migrating a database could be as simple as removing the fiber-optic cable from
the current system, daisy-chaining a NonStop S-series fiber-optic cable to the existing
cable, and connecting the NonStop S-series cable to the 6761 fiber-optic ServerNet
addressable controller (F-SAC) in the NonStop S-series system.
Before you move any cables, though, you must consider the requirements of the
various database products installed on the current system. The complexity of moving
a database from one system to another can be significantly affected by your answers
to the questions asked in the next subsections.
If New System and Current System Are Nearly Identical
This subsection assumes that the NonStop S-series server is a new, unused system
with the G06.01 or later release installed. If the NonStop S-series server was installed
previously and is being used for test or production, see the subsection If New System
and Current System Are Dissimilar on page D-5.
To be considered identical, the current NonStop K-series system and new NonStop
S-series system should have the same:
Node name and node number
Number of processors
Number of disk drives with the same data to manage
This migration is relatively easy to implement, because there is no need to make
modifications to the database catalogs and file labels before migrating the database. If
the node name and node number of the new system are not the same as on the
current system, see If New System and Current System Are Dissimilar on page D-5.
If the node name and node number of the current system and the new system will be
the same, consider the following additional questions before implementing the
migration:
Are there a different number of processors on the new system?
If the current system has fewer (or more) processors than the new system, you
need to plan load balancing for the new system.
Does all the data you need reside on the external disks that you are moving?
Check to make sure that all the files you need, such as catalogs and application
configuration files, reside on the external disks that you are moving. If any of these
files reside on the internal disks of the current system, you need to make plans to
move these files to the new system.
What software release is the current system running?
G06.01 or later is required for using the 6760 ServerNet device adapter.
