Plan the Installation
How important is a fault-tolerant design to you?
If fault tolerance is important for disk drives connected to the 6760 adapter, you
must have at least two 6760 adapters communicating with each disk module.
Whether the adapters are installed in different enclosures or not, one adapter
should be installed in an even-numbered slot and the other adapter in an
odd-numbered slot.
If fault tolerance is important for mirrored disk drives and if the disks of the mirrored
volume reside in separate disk modules, you must have at least four 6760
adapters communicating with both disk modules. See Figure 1-8 and Figure 1-9 on
page 1-13 for examples of installing 6760 adapters in a fault-tolerant configuration.
What is the distance between the adapter slot and the device?
The length of the cable connection between the device and 6760 adapter should
not exceed 2 kilometers for the F-SAC and should not exceed 23 meters for the S-
SAC (unless you are using the SCSI extender for the S-SAC connection).
Fiber-Optic Cable Questions (for the F-SAC)
How many NonStop S-series fiber-optic cables do you need?
You must order at least one NonStop S-series fiber-optic cable for each F-SAC.
You can continue to use NonStop K-series fiber-optic cables, but for each K-series
fiber-optic cable you use, you must also order either of the following:
°
A 1-meter 6760 adapter cable (that comes with a coupler)
°
A cable (2 meters or longer) and a separate coupler
For a list of components, see Appendix A.
If you plan on reusing K-series fiber-optic cables, are they long enough?
If the K-series fiber-optic cable you already have can reach from the device to the
6760 adapter, order the 1-meter adapter cable with coupler.
If the K-series cable does not reach from the device to the 6760 adapter, order a
NonStop S-series fiber-optic cable that extends the K-series cable to the needed
length and a coupler for connecting the two cables.
For a list of components, see Appendix A.
SCSI Cable Questions (for the S-SAC)
Is the distance between the tape drive and the 6760 adapter more than 23 meters?
You must install a SCSI extender if the device is more that 23 meters away from
the 6760 adapter. For details, see Extending the SCSI Interface on page 1-14.
