9.4.3 How to Enable Labeled-Tape Processing
To use MEDIACOM, the system must be labeled for labeled-tape
processing by specifying the following entry in the
ALLPROCESSORS paragraph of the CONFTEXT configuration
file:
TAPE_LABEL_PROCESSING ENABLED;
This entry routes all tape requests through the Tandem tape server
process, $ZSVR. If this entry is not specified, SYSGEN assumes
that labeled-tape processing is disabled.
Note. With labeled-tape processing enabled, both labeled and unlabeled
tapes can be used. With labeled-tape processing disabled, only unlabeled
tapes can be used.
9.5 Controlling Compression
Data compression is a standard feature on the 5155, 5159, 5150
and 5151 drives. The drive writes uncompressed data (unless
compression mode is turned on). When activated for the 5155,
5159, 5150 or 5151 drive, compression allows the drive to store up
to two times as much data on a cartridge tape; however, the amount
of compression varies with the data being written. Typically
cartridge capacities can be expected to double.
Note: The system does not detect any difference in writing or
reading compressed or uncompressed data. A disk file of 200
kilobytes written to tape in compressed mode is still a 200-kilobyte
file on the tape, but it consumes less tape than the same file with
uncompressed data.
