3174 Device Status/Sense Bytes
This appendix contains the following items:
A description of the IBM 3174 device status/sense bytes
A table with device status/sense bytes
Description of Device Status/Sense Bytes
Table G-1 shows the status and sense bytes for the IBM 3174. To use Table G-1, take
the number %040140 in the STATUS SU display for the AM3270 subsystem, as an
example:
The subdevice sends two bytes of sense or status information, which you can display
through the STATUS SU command. The number in the Status column is preceded by a
“%,” indicating it is an octal number. Converted to hexadecimal, this number is 4060
(EBCDIC hexadecimal), which, according to the codes at the bottom of the table,
means Command Reject (CR).
In this particular example, only the Command Reject (CR) bit is set to on, making the
interpretation a simple one. However, you can receive the ten possible codes singly as
well as in combination. If the codes are received singly, they have a different
interpretation than if they are received in combination; the codes are not necessarily
cumulative. For more information on interpreting the bits, see the IBM Manual 3174
Establishment Control Functional Description. The following list describes the codes in
alphabetic order, along with their meanings:
1. Control Check (CC) indicates that there is a cluster controller problem.
2. Command Reject (CR) indicates that an invalid 3270 command was received.
3. Data Check (DC) indicates a 3174 operation to a device was unsuccessful.
4. Device Busy (DB) indicates that the device is busy executing an operation or that a
busy detection was previously made by a command or poll.
5. Device End (DE) indicates that the device has changed from busy to not busy.
6. Equipment Check (EC) indicates one of the following:
Printer character-generator or sync-check error occurred.
Printer became mechanically disabled.
3174-detected bad parity from the device.
