Preface
086705 Tandem Computers Incorporated xi
This manual describes the access methods AM3270 and TR3271, which provide
application programs with links to IBM mainframes and IBM 3270-family terminals
and printers. The information in this manual applies to:
3650/6100 CSS for D- and C-series releases
Non-6100 CSS environments for C-series releases only.
How This Manual is
Organized
This manual is divided into three parts:
Sections 1 and 2 describe bisynchronous (bisync) protocols in general and give an
overview of AM3270 and TR3271.
AM3270 is described in Sections 3 and 4.
TR3271 is described in Sections 5 and 6.
Appendix A contains tables for controller and device addressing.
Who Should Read This
Manual
This manual is for those who are responsible for writing application programs that use
file-system procedures to interact with 3270-family terminals and printers and to
access data on a host computer. It also provides background information for those
who manage or configure these access methods.
Related Manuals The other manuals about these access methods are:
System Generation Manual for AM3270 and System Generation Manual for TR3271
Explains how to configure these access methods. Includes overviews and detailed
discussions of all SYSGEN modifiers.
AM3270 Management Programming Manual
Explains rules and concepts for developing management programming
applications that communicate with AM3270. Includes section on event

management and an appendix on error numbers and error lists.
The interface tools used for configuration and control of AM3270 and TR3271 lines and
subdevices in a 3650/6100 CSS environment are the Dynamic System Configuration
(DSC) program, and the Subsystem Control Facility (SCF). The manuals for the
interfaces to these access methods are as follows. Note that support for the
Communications Management Interface (CMI) has been dropped for D-series releases.
Dynamic System Configuration Manual
Explains the Dynamic System Configuration (DSC) program and its interactive
interface, Configuration Utility Program (COUP).
