Metrics and ASAP States
Historical Ranking
Historical ranking uses the percentage-based method to calculate the ASAP State for a
metric, but it then sums it with the difference between the last state and State 2.
For example, consider a metric where the state at the first interval was 3 because it
exceeded the objective by 10%. For the next interval, the metric also exceeded the
objective by 10% and therefore an OEM state of 3 is computed using the Percentage-
based model. The 3 is summed with the difference between the last interval’s state (3)
and the OK state (2). This yields a state for the metric at this interval of 3 + (3-2) = 3 +
1 = 4.
Historical ranking lets a minor problem such as an objective being exceeded by 10%
grow to a higher level of alert status if it persists. It also lets simple one-interval spikes
pass without critical highlighting in the ASAP Client. The preceding table describes
ASAP states returned by ASAPX when Historical ranking is in effect.
Metrics and ASAP States
ASAP can highlight domains based on the states supplied for each metric by ASAPX.
ASAP highlights the first metric found with the highest state.
For example, assume an application produces three metrics: Error Rate, Transaction
Rate, and Utilization. These metrics are defined as the first three attributes following
ErrorState in the EDL file. If Error Rate and Utilization are state 2 and the Transaction
Rate is state 3, the Transaction Rate state is applied to the entire domain for the
purpose of highlighting the domain within ASAP. If Error Rate and Transaction Rate are
both state 3, but Utilization remains state 2, the Error Rate is highlighted because it is
first in the list with the highest state.
4 Medium An objective was exceeded by between 15 and 24 percent.
5 High An objective was exceeded by between 25 and 34 percent.
6 Warning An objective was exceeded by between 35 and 44 percent.
7 Critical An objective was exceeded by 45 percent or more.
8 Down The process that registered the domain is down. (Generated by all
ranking modes.)
