Configuring ASAP Client for Host-Based Goals
When you turn on a host-based goal using the GOAL command, you should configure ASAP
Client to use that goal for alerting instead of the y-axis value in the graph window. You do
this by returning to the ASAP Properties sheet’s Attribute tab, selecting the attribute and
then selecting one of the 3 host-based option buttons: “Use Value..Graph Value”, “Use
State..Graph Value” or “Use State..Graph State” in State Determination section.
First, a little background information before discussing those selections. ASAP Server
always reports a value for an attribute and a state for the attribute. These are called state
pairs. For example, a CPU BUSY value might be reported as 85 and the state value as 2.
The state represented by the number 2 is the OK or UP state, it means there is a host-based
goal for the attribute and ASAP has compared the value of 85 against that goal and that the
goal was met.
Here are the ASAP States that can be reported:
1
Existence
There is no goal currently active for the attribute
2
OK
There is a goal and it was met
3
Low Alert
Indicates a low level performance alert
4
Medium Alert
Indicates a medium level performance alert
5
High Alert
Indicates a severe performance alert
6
Warning
The object is in a warning state
7
Critical
There is a goal for the object and the goal was not met.
8
Down
The object is down
When first installed, ASAP Server only reports states 1, 2, 7 and 8 - Existence, Up, Critical
and Down, respectively.
Now back to the Client State Determination settings:
Use Value..Graph Value
This setting means to use the value of the attribute as the state
of the attribute to control its highlighting and to also graph the
value of the attribute.
Use State..Graph Value
This setting tells ASAP Client to use the state from the server to
control the highlighting of the attribute, but to graph the value of
the attribute.
Use State..Graph State
This setting instructs ASAP Client to use the state from the
server to control highlighting, and to also graph the state value
itself, not the attribute value.
The first selection is special and should not be used. When you set up a host-based
objective for an attribute you should select either Use State..Graph Value or Use
State..Graph State. HP recommends using Use State..Graph State since the highest spike
