subsystem manager
subsystem manager. An SCF process that performs configuration and management
functions for an SCF subsystem.
SVC. See Switched Virtual Circuit (SVC).
SWAN. See ServerNet wide area network (SWAN) concentrator.
Switched Virtual Circuit (SVC). A connection established via signaling. The user defines
the endpoints when the call is initiated.
symbol. (1) The symbolic name of a value, typically a function entry point or a data location.
In the context of loadable libraries, symbols are defined in loadfiles and referenced in
the same or other loadfiles. (2) Within the ServerNet architecture, the nine or more bits
that encode 8-bit data and protocol commands.
symbolic reference. An occurrence in code or data of the value of a symbol. The symbolic
reference is bound (resolved and made usable) by assigning to it the value of a
definition of that symbol. The symbol value is normally the address of a function or
variable named by the symbol. In position-independent code (PIC) loadfiles, symbolic
references occur only in data.
symbols region. See inspect region.
SYSnn subvolume. A subvolume on the $SYSTEM volume where the new version of the
NonStop Kernel operating system image is located. Also located on the SYSnn
subvolume is system-dependent and release version update (RVU)-dependent
software. nn is an octal number in the range %00 through %77.
synchronous. A mode of data communications transmission in which characters are
accumulated in a buffer at the sending terminal and then sent as a block of data.
Synchronous transmission normally uses external clocking provided by a synchronous
modem. The clocking scheme assumes that once transmission starts, characters will
arrive in a block at a predetermined speed. Contrast with asynchronous.
Synchronous Optical Network (SONET). An ANSI standard for transmitting information
over optical fiber. This standard is used or accepted in the United States or Canada
and is a variation of the SDH International standard.
Synchronous Transfer Signal (STS-n). SONET standards for transmission over OC-n
optical fiber by multiplexing
n
STS-1 frames, (for example, STS-3 at 155.52 Mbps,
STS-12 at 622.08 Mbps, and STS-48 at 2.488 Gbps).
system area network (SAN). A high-speed network, within a system, that connects
processors to each other and to peripheral controllers. A SAN has the performance of
a massively parallel interconnect, but has distribution capabilities similar to a LAN.
NonStop S-series servers support the ServerNet system area network (ServerNet
SAN).
