wide area network (WAN)
wide area network (WAN). A network that operates over a larger geographical area than
that provided by a LAN. The elements of a WAN may be separated by distances great
enough to require telephone communications. Contrast with local area network (LAN).
wild-card character. A character that stands for any possible character or characters in a
search string or in a name applying to multiple objects. In DSM object-name templates,
two wild-card characters appear: ? for a single character and * for zero or more
consecutive characters. See also object-name template.
$ZNET. The name of the Subsystem Control Point (SCP) management process.
$ZZATM. The name of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) monitor process.
