front-end process
front-end process. A process that serves as the intermediary between an application
process and communication lines providing connectivity with front-end devices such as
terminals and point-of-sale devices. Contrast with back-end process.
gateway process. A process, such as the Transaction Delivery Process (TDP) that is part
of RSC/MP, that manages communications between dissimilar environments (for
example, a workstation and an HP system). A gateway process both transfers
information and converts it to a form compatible with the protocols used by the
destination environment.
Guardian. An environment available for interactive or programmatic use with the HP
NonStop operating system. Processes that run in the Guardian environment use the
Guardian system procedure calls as their application program interface, and might also
use related APIs such as the Pathsend and TMF procedure calls. Interactive users of
the Guardian environment use the Tandem Advanced Command Language (TACL) or
another HP product’s command interpreter, such as PATHCOM. See also Open
System Services (OSS).
Guardian API. See Guardian application program interface (Guardian API).
Guardian application program interface (Guardian API). The traditional set of Guardian
procedure calls that provides access to the features of the HP NonStop operating
system. See also Open System Services (OSS).
Guardian environment. The Guardian API, tools, and utilities.
graphical user interface (GUI). A type of screen interface that typically includes pull-down
menus, icons, dialog boxes, and online help.
hot standby component. A passive component that provides a backup to an active
component. It becomes active only if the corresponding active component fails.
HP Capacity Model (TCM). An HP product that uses a spreadsheet to help operations staff
determine and model transaction workloads, keep a data history for use with different
models, project capacity needs, and predict response times.
HP Failure Data System (TFDS). A component of the HP NonStop operating system. This
tool isolates software problems and provides automatic processor failure data
collection, diagnosis, and recovery services.
HP LAN Access Method (TLAM). An access method that can be used with the Expand
subsystem to provide Expand-over-LAN connectivity.
HP Maintenance and Diagnostic System (TMDS). A diagnostic software tool that
continuously monitors the hardware components of an HP system and diagnoses
system problems before they affect the system’s performance.
