What’s in This Manual?
This manual is organized in seven sections and a glossary. The glossary defines 
technical terms and acronyms. 
•
Section 1, “Introduction to Change Management,” describes the factors that cause 
change, defines change management in the Tandem environment, describes the goals 
of change management, explains how Tandem measures outages, and shows how 
change management relates to the operations management (OM) model.
•
Section 2, “Change Control,” defines change control, shows how change control 
affects system and application availability, describes the requirements for 
successfully implementing a change control process, and outlines the phases of the 
change control process.
•
Section 3, “Making System Software and Hardware Changes Online,” describes the 
online reconfiguration capabilities of Subsystem Control Facility (SCF), explains 
how you can configure your system to accommodate future growth, identifies 
hardware changes that can be performed without taking your NonStop system down, 
and shows you how to install interim product modifications (IPMs) for certain 
products without performing a system load.

Section 4, “Making Application Subsystem Changes Online,” identifies the changes 
you can perform to NonStop Transaction Services/Massively Parallel (TS/MP), 
NonStop Structured Query Language/Massively Parallel (SQL/MP), and NonStop 
Transaction Manager/MP (TM/MP) without taking your NonStop system down. It 
also discusses making online changes to the NonStop TUXEDO, and Pathway 
transaction monitor environments these core services support.
