The Pathway Environment
•
Intelligent Device Support (IDS) Facility—A facility that increases the number of
device types that can be handled by the TCP, thereby extending access to Pathway
server classes to a wide range of intelligent devices. IDS is part of the TCP.
Pathway Environment Changes You Can Perform Online
Although the administrative environments for each of the client and requester
environments differ, there is only one administrative environment for Pathway servers.
Pathway administrators can configure and control the Pathway server environment in
one of two ways:
•
Interactively by entering PATHCOM commands at a terminal
•
Programmatically by writing a management application that uses a management
programmatic interface
Both of these methods enable administrators to send commands and instructions to
PATHMON, the process that monitors the Pathway server and Pathway/TS requester
environments and directs their activities.
The PATHCOM Interactive Interface
The PATHCOM interactive interface provides a rich set of commands for defining and
managing the Pathway server environment. Using PATHCOM, administrators can:
•
Configure server objects
•
Start and stop server objects
•
Obtain status information
•
Request performance statistics
The PATHCOM interface also provides a full set of commands for managing the
Pathway/TS requester environment. Using PATHCOM, administrators can:
•
Configure and manage TCPs
•
Configure and manage terminals
•
Obtain statistics about TCP and terminal resources
For example, you might want to add a TERM (a PATHMON object that defines a
dedicated input/output device) to a specific TCP, add another TCP, or add an external
TCP to ease PATHMON’s workload.
For more information about managing the Pathway environment using the PATHCOM
interactive interface, see the following manuals:

The Management Programming Interface
The Pathway management programming interface is a set of Subsystem Programmatic
Interface (SPI) procedures that allows a management application to communicate
directly with the PATHMON process to manage both the Pathway server and
Pathway/TS requester environments.
