graphical user interface (GUI)
graphical user interface (GUI). A type of screen interface that typically includes pull-down
menus, icons, dialog boxes, and online help.
input/output (I/O) process. A system process that manages communications with I/O
devices (such as disks and printers) and communications lines. An I/O process pair
logically “owns” one or more I/O devices or communications lines. I/O processes are
the system processes that make up a communications subsystem.
Interim Product Modification (IPM). An interim software release that may include one or
more fixes to Tandem code or may contain code that adds function to a Tandem software
product. You receive an IPM on a BACKUP tape that contains the updated program and
documentation files in one or more distribution subvolumes (DSVs).
LAN. See local area network.
local area network (LAN). A set of computers, word processors, and other electronic
devices linked to create an interoffice or inter-site network.
macro. A sequence of Tandem Advanced Command Language (TACL) commands and built-
in functions that can contain dummy arguments, thus providing a means for simple
argument substitution. When the macro name is given to TACL, TACL substitutes the
command sequences for the macro name and replaces any dummy arguments with
parameter values supplied to TACL. Macros are used to automate operations tasks.
management applications. User-written applications that automate configuration and control
tasks. For example, a management application can request from the Pathway
PATHMON process the same kinds of services that system managers can request
interactively using the Pathway PATHCOM interface.
NetBatch. Automated job management system that schedules and dispatches batch jobs.
Network Statistics Extended. A network management tool that provides operators with a
global perspective on the entire network. With NSX, operators can collect and monitor
up-to-the-moment performance statistics on all nodes, processors, and Expand line
handlers in the network.
node. A system or device that follows the protocols of a specific network and that other
systems or devices in that network can address.
NonStop Access for Networking. A collection of network components that extends fault-
tolerance computing through the LAN to the desktop.
NonStop SQL/MP. The Tandem relational database management system that promotes
efficient online access to large distributed databases.
NonStop TM/MP. See NonStop Transaction Manager/MP.
NonStop Transaction Manager/MP (TM/MP). A data management product that maintains
the consistency of a database and provides the tools for database recovery.
