Determining the Dialback Mode for Dial-In Users
The Autoconnect feature for asynchronous terminal users requires that the GUEST user
name be configured without a password, presenting a potential security problem for dial-
in users. (The GUEST user name is provided by default and is assigned a blank
password.) To prevent dial-in users from using the GUEST user name, you should
disable PPP, NASI, NRN, SLIP, ARA, LAT, and Rlogin; only Telnet should be enabled.
Determining the Dialback Mode for Dial-In Users
The AWAN access server allows you to configure one of the following dialback modes
for dial-in users:
Determining IP Address Assignments for Users
To connect to a TCP/IP network, a user requires an IP address. The AWAN access server
can be configured in the following ways to provide this address:
•
Each port can be assigned an IP address. When this method is used, a user is
assigned the port IP address when he or she connects to the AWAN access server.
•
An IP address can be assigned for each user name. When this method is used, each
user is assigned a unique IP address when he or she connects to the AWAN access
server.
•
Users can provide their own IP address by sending an IP address from their remote
communications software package.
Note. The GUEST user name is not a security issue for asynchronous terminal users because
Tandem applications such as TACL have their own login security. For information about the
Autoconnect feature, refer to Configuring the Autoconnect Feature on page 8-24.
Worksheet Instructions. Record the protocols to be enabled for each user on your User
Configuration Worksheet.
Choose this mode... If you want...
Allow Dialback to be performed only if the user requests it.
Deny Dialback to be denied.
Require Dialback to always be performed. The user must provide the
dialback phone number. If the user does not provide a dialback
phone number, the number configured for the user is used. If the
user does not provide a dialback phone number and there is no
phone number configured for the user, the connection fails.
Secure Dialback to always be performed using a phone number configured
for the user. If Secure is chosen and there is no phone number
configured for the user, the connection fails.
Worksheet Instructions. Record the dialback mode to be used by each user on your User
Configuration Worksheet.
