Configuring the Himalaya NonStop Server
Configuring the Himalaya NonStop Server
Before you can configure an asynchronous terminal or serial printer connection on your
AWAN access server, you must configure the software on the Himalaya NonStop server
with which the terminal or serial printer will communicate.
Required Software
The following software is required on the Himalaya NonStop server:
For asynchronous terminal and workstation-based emulator connections: Tandem
TELNET Server (Telserv) subsystem
For serial printer connections: FASTPTCP LAN printer spooler product
Himalaya NonStop TCP/IP subsystem
ServerNet LAN Systems Access (SLSA) subsystem (for Himalaya S-series servers)
or Tandem LAN Access Method (TLAM) (for Himalaya K-series servers)
Tandem Telserv Subsystem
The Telserv subsystem is Tandem’s offering of the TCP/IP application layer protocol
called TELNET. TELNET enables a user at one site to interact with LAN-attached
connections or remote systems at another site as if the user’s terminal were directly
connected to the remote machine. The Telserv subsystem can be configured to run in the
NonStop Guardian environment or NonStop Open Systems Services (OSS)
environment. (OSS is the Tandem POSIX offering.)
The main component of the Telserv subsystem is the Telserv process. The Telserv
process communicates with a Telnet client application. Each Telserv process can support
a maximum of 256 services and 256 windows. A service enables users to configure or
inquire about aspects of their Telserv service. A window is a virtual terminal interface to
user programs on the Himalaya NonStop server.
Creating a Telserv process and adding services and windows is explained in Configuring
a Telserv Process on page 8-6. For more information about the Telserv subsystem, refer
to the SCF Reference Manual for Telserv.
Note. Tandem 6530 terminals and terminal emulators, VT-series terminals and terminal
emulators using 6530 emulation, and 6530 gateway terminals interoperate with any version of
the Himalaya NonStop TCP/IP and Telserv subsystems. Some features and fixes might not be
present in older versions of the Telserv subsystem, however.
Note. TELNET also is sometimes referred to as the Network Virtual Terminal (NVT) service.
