Configuring Workstations
Configuring Workstations
You must install and configure the appropriate software on each remote workstation to
enable remote access. This subsection describes workstation software requirements,
explains how to prepare users to connect to the AWAN access server, and describes
special configuration considerations for certain types of connections.
Required Software
The following workstation software is required for IP, Novell NetWare, and AppleTalk
networks.
Software for IP Networks
For IP networks, the AWAN access server supports remote-node sessions, remote-office
sessions, and remote-control dial-in sessions using the following protocols:
•
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). PPP can be used with either the Challenge
Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) or the Password Authentication
Protocol (PAP) for user authentication.
•
Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP)
PC users must install a communications software package to handle the modem setup
and to support TCP/IP over the PPP or SLIP protocol. There are many such software
packages available, including the following:
•
Windows 95 and Windows NT (these operating systems have a built-in remote
access server (RAS) capability that is compatible with the AWAN access server)
•
Chameleon
•
Trumpet Winsock
•
PC/TCP
•
Distinct Reflection
•
Stampede Remote Office Gold (for use with Windows 3.11 and Windows for
Workgroups)
These software packages add a TCP/IP stack to the PC along with the necessary drivers
and dial screens to facilitate dial-in access. The AWAN access server is standards-
compatible with these software packages.
Note. A license to use Stampede Remote Office Gold is provided with the AWAN access
server.
