Configuring Remote Access Connections

Required Software
A remote-control TCP/IP connection requires PC users to install a separate remote-
control software package—in addition to the remote-node software—on both the remote
and local (host) PCs. Examples of remote-control software packages for TCP/IP users
include the following:
•
PC Anywhere
•
Reach Out
•
Carbon Copy
The remote user first dials in using a remote node connection to the LAN, then launches
the remote-control application.
Software for Novell NetWare Networks
For Novell NetWare networks, the AWAN access server supports remote-node and
remote-office dial-in sessions using the following protocols:
•
Novell Remote Node (NRN)
•
NetWare IPX-over-PPP
NRN enables users to connect to the central site by using the propriety Novell IPX client
program. Remote users can dial into the network and access a NetWare file server and
NetWare resources as if they were locally connected to the network.
NetWare IPX-over-PPP allows remote users to use standards-based PPP to connect to a
NetWare IPX network. The following software packages can be used to provide
IPX-over-PPP connectivity:
•
LinkIPX
•
Stampede Remote Office Gold
•
Windows 95
•
Wanderlink
Stampede Remote Office Gold enables users to dial into the central Novell server and
provides an IPX/PPP driver for the communication port. It supports both the Novell
VLM and ODI files for attaching a remote PC to a Novell server. Users must provide
their own Novell client files.
A remote-control IPX connection is supported using the NetWare Asynchronous
Services Interface (NASI). The NASI specification defines a programming interface that
enables software applications to communicate with a shared serial port.
NASI remote control is a special port used only for remote-control users. By using a
NASI remote-control connection, users on the local network can run remote-control host
software and wait for incoming calls from the remote computer through modems in or
connected to the AWAN access server. Only one host for each AWAN access server port
can wait at one time. When a NASI remote-control session is established, the modem is
not in use until the remote user dials in and connects to the waiting remote-control host.
Note. A license to use Stampede Remote Office Gold is provided with the AWAN access
server.
