Required Software
The following applications are provided with the AWAN access server for remote-
control connections for NetWare IPX network users:
Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows
INT14 to NASI Redirector for DOS
Remote-control software must be installed on both the local (remote-control host) and
remote computers.
Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows
You can use the Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows with remote-control
applications that support standard communication ports and support gateway
connections to the remote-control host computer. When calling the remote-control host
computer, the remote-control client computer must allow you to log into the AWAN
access server before trying to connect to the remote-control host computer. You can use
PCAnywhere, Remote Control, or Carbon Copy to support gateway connections.
If you want to use a package that does not support gateway connections through the
AWAN access server, you can use a dial-out port rather than a remote-control port.
However, if you configure a remote-control host computer to wait on a dial-out port, that
port will not be available for any other dial-in connections. Configuring dial-out
connections is explained in
Section 11, Configuring Dial-Out Connections.
INT14 to NASI Redirector for DOS
You can use the INT14 to NASI Redirector for DOS with remote-control applications
that support NASI and that understand Interrupt 14. The Interrupt 14 specification
defines a programming interface that enables software applications to communicate with
a serial port. Unlike NASI, Interrupt 14 does not provide a mechanism for dynamic
connection and disconnection of modems. Appropriate applications include
PCAnywhere, Remote Control, and Carbon Copy. If you want to use a package that does
not support NASI, you must use the Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows
application.
Software for AppleTalk Networks
The AWAN access server supports remote-node and remote-office access for Macintosh
computers using the Apple Remote Access (ARA) product. ARA enables remote
Macintosh computers to access AppleTalk resources on the local network.
Remote-control access is not supported for Macintosh computers.
Note. Installing the Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows and INT14 to NASI Redirector
for DOS applications is described in Installing the Software Utilities on page 3-3.
Note. Com Port to NASI Redirector for Windows does not work with Windows 95 running 32-
bit applications.
Note. The AWAN access server does not include Apple management or client software. You
must use the ARA software available from Apple Computer, Inc.
