Updating the Runtime Code Using a Terminal Emulator
This subsection describes how to update the runtime code on your AWAN access server
using a PC running a terminal emulator. You must use ProComm Plus or any terminal
emulator that supports ASCII downloads to perform the update; do not use Outside
View.
To update the runtime code using a PC and a terminal emulator, perform steps 1 through
10 as described in Updating the Boot Code
on page 14-27, then perform the following
steps:
1. Select the Console Port Download option from the Software Update Menu and press
the Enter key. You will be prompted to transmit the runtime code file as follows:
Start transmitting file
2. Promptly start the upload from the terminal emulator by pressing the PgUp key,
selecting ASCII, and then entering the file name to be uploaded.
The upload process takes approximately five minutes. When the upload has
completed successfully, the following message is displayed:
CONSOLE DOWNLOAD COMPLETE
Press ESC to Continue
3. Power off the AWAN access server.
4. Power on the AWAN access server while pressing the Factory Config button using a
paper clip or ballpoint pen for at least 30 seconds. (The Factory Config button is
located on the back of models 3883-8, 3883-8R, 3883-16, and 3883-16R and under
the front bezel on models 3884, 3884R, 3885, and 3885R.) Wait an additional 30
seconds for the flash PROM to be written before powering off or rebooting, or the
factory default settings will not be permanently stored.
Note. You can also update the runtime code using the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) as
described in Updating the Runtime Code Using TFTP on page 14-32 or by using the RAS
Management Tool as described in Updating the Runtime Code Using the RAS Management
To ol on page 14-33.
Caution. If you take too long to send the file, the file contents of hexadecimal data will be
echoed to the screen and you must restart the procedure. During normal upload, either nothing
or a periodic ... is displayed.
Note. If you receive an error from Windows stating that the application performed an illegal
operation, the AWAN access server has probably changed the baud rate after successfully
loading the boot code. If this occurs, terminate the connection and follow the instructions in
Updating the AWAN Access Server Software on page 14-36.
Note. If an error occurs, retry the update at successively slower baud rates.
