Modem Signals Required
Modem Signals Required
For RS-232 ports, Signal Control is enabled by default. (Signal Control cannot be
controlled or displayed in the RAS Management Tool; it can only be changed using the
CLI.) When Signal Control is enabled, the AWAN access server ignores input unless the
DSR modem signal is present, effectively preventing a new login. If the DSR signal is
dropped during a connection, the port logs out. Because DSR is usually connected to the
DTR signal from the terminal, powering off the terminal drops the DSR signal at the
AWAN access server and resets the AWAN access server port.
For Current Loop ports, Signal Control is set to disabled at factory configuration reset
and when Hardware Interface is set to 20mA Current Loop on the Line Tab dialog box
in the RAS Management Tool. Signal Control is set to enabled when Hardware Interface
is set to RS-232 on the Line Tab dialog box in the RAS Management Tool. Modem
signals do not apply to Current Loop devices. Current Loop ports cannot be reset by
powering off the terminal or printer.
Protocol Detection
When a port is in a idle state, the first input character begins the protocol detection
sequence. The protocol detection sequence determines if a terminal session or a specific
remote access protocol is being requested by the device.
Protocol detection is affected by the Term Type and modem configurations. (Term Type
may be configured on the Adv. Line tab dialog box in the RAS Management Tool or by
using the Change Port Type command.)
Each Term Type and modem configuration combination is described in the following
subsections.
Term Type Not 6530
Pressing the Enter key three times (ASCII carriage returns or hex 0d 0d 0d) indicates a
terminal session. Other sequences, which are unique to each remote access protocol,
identify the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), the Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP), and
so forth.
If the wrong character is entered, the procedure must be restarted. For example, if the
user typed Enter-Enter-X, the procedure could be restarted by pressing the Enter key
three times.
Note. For the purpose of this discussion, a modem port is defined as port on a modem port
module or an asynchronous port for which a modem has been configured.
