6530 Terminal Detection
6530 Terminal Detection
AWAN access server R models (3883-8R, 3883-16R, 3884R, and 3885R) support
emulation of 6530 terminals on VT-series and ANSI terminals. The AWAN access server
must select 6530 terminal emulation or the actual 6530 protocol depending on the actual
terminal in use at a given time. The terminal type may vary if a different physical
terminal or emulator is connected, or if the terminal type is reconfigured at the terminal
or emulator, or if a modem is used.
6530 terminal detection varies according to the Term Type configured, whether the
session is from a remote Telnet client, and by the presence of the R option. Each
combination of these features is described in the following subsections.
Term Type Not 6530
If the Term Type is not 6530, all 6530 support is bypassed and login continues with the
Enter Username> prompt.
Term Type 6530, R Option
The AWAN access server sends the following 6530 Set Conversational mode sequence
to probe the terminal:
EOT SOH C ETX @
This sequence is equivalent to hex 04 01 43 03 40.
After the Set Conversational mode sequence is sent, the AWAN access server waits for a
response from the terminal. For non-6530 terminals, the following information is
displayed:
C@C@C@C@
Depending on the terminal or emulator type, additional characters may also be displayed
to represent the control characters EOT SOH and STX. Rectangular blocks are common;
this display is benign and can be ignored.
6530 terminals process the sequence by switching to conversational mode (if they are
not already in that mode) and sending an ACK (hex 06) to the AWAN access server. The
AWAN access server activates the 6530 asynchronous protocol for the session and
displays the following:
6530 terminal type detected
If an unexpected response is received (such as Enter key), or no response is received for
0.4 seconds, the AWAN access server repeats the probe. If no ACK is received after 4
attempts, the AWAN access server activates VT-to-6530 protocol conversion for the
sessions and displays the following message:
VT100-Ansi terminal type assumed
The AWAN access server sends the following VT100 sequence to reset video mode:
ESC [0m
