AppleTalk. A proprietary networking protocol developed by Apple Computer, Inc. to enable
Apple computers to talk to other computers.
Apple Remote Access Protocol (ARAP). An Apple Computer, Inc. protocol that allows a
Macintosh computer to communicate with another Macintosh computer or with an
AppleTalk network, over standard telephone lines.
ARAP. See Apple Remote Access Protocol (ARAP).
authentication. A function in which a user’s identity is verified.
authorization. The creation of specific rights for a user once the user has been authenticated.
Autoconnect feature. An AWAN access server feature that enables asynchronous terminal or
terminal emulator users to connect to the Tandem NonStop server application
automatically. When the Autoconnect feature is enabled, the AWAN access server login
and local prompts are not displayed and users are connected directly to the Tandem
NonStop server application; automatic port logout occurs when the session ends.
BOOTP. A protocol that enables the AWAN access server to obtain an Internet Protocol (IP)
address.
broadcast. A method of sending information addressed to two or more receiving devices
simultaneously.
Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP). A protocol that is used to verify a
user's identity using a three-way handshake with a challenge and a response. CHAP
issues a challenge to a user attempting to connect to the network. The user then sends a
response. Both the challenge and the response are encrypted, then the encryptions are
compared.
CHAP. See Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
community name. The name for a group of users with the same network capabilities. The
name can also be used as a password for the users.
Current Loop. An alternative to RS-232 that is supported by some terminals and serial
printers. Current Loop support is provided by the RS-232/20mA Current Loop port
module for AWAN access server models 3884 and 3885.
Ethernet. A local area network (LAN) that uses the carrier sense multiple access with
collision detection (CSMA/CD) access method on a bus topology and is the basis for the
IEEE 802.3 standard.
Ethernet frame type. A structure that defines how data is grouped into packets. The frame
types supports Ethernet II IEEE 802.2, 802.2, 802.3 SNAP.
