Understanding the Discovery Process
Understanding the Discovery Process
Once you have logged in, the RAS Management Tool automatically searches the LAN
for AWAN access servers. As the RAS Management Tool discovers AWAN access
servers, they are displayed as server icons at the bottom of the RAS Management Tool
window.
When it is initially displayed, a server icon is labeled with the default name of the
AWAN access server. Default names begin with the letters RA or TS followed by the last
six digits of the AWAN access server’s media access control (MAC) address. RA
indicates an R model, such as the 3884R, and TS indicates a base model, such as the
3884. An example of a server icon is shown in Figure 5-9
on page 5-12.
If your AWAN access server is in an IP environment, it will not be discovered until it has
been assigned an IP address. An IP address can be assigned to an AWAN access server
in the following ways:
By a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. This method of IP
address assignment is described in Obtaining an IP Address From a DHCP Server
on page 5-5.
By configuring the BOOTP Service. This method of IP address assignment is
described in Assigning an IP Address Using the BOOTP Service on page 5-5.
By using Command Line Interface (CLI) commands. CLI commands are described
in Appendix C, Command Line Interface (CLI) Commands.
If the management workstation is on a different subnet than your AWAN access server,
you must configure the Learn Service before your AWAN access server will be
discovered by the RAS Management Tool. Configuring the Learn Service is described in
What to Do If Your AWAN Access Server Is On a Remote Subnet
on page 5-7.
If your AWAN access server in an Internet Packet Exchange (IPX) environment, the
AWAN access server monitors network traffic to determine its IPX address and the
values of other IPX parameters. You can override some IPX parameter settings; refer to
Configuring IPX Properties
on page 6-6 for more information.
Note. The RAS Management Tool attempts to discover a new AWAN access server every 30
seconds using a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) broadcast. You can disable
this SNMP broadcast using the Discovery option. The Discovery option is described in
Configuring the Discovery Option on page 5-20.
