Obtaining an IP Address From a DHCP Server
Obtaining an IP Address From a DHCP Server
If a DHCP server exists in the IP network, it automatically downloads an IP address to
your AWAN access server. To view the IP address assigned to your AWAN access server,
display the BOOTP Entry dialog box. Refer to Assigning an IP Address Using the
BOOTP Service for information about displaying the BOOTP Entry dialog box.
Assigning an IP Address Using the BOOTP Service
If your AWAN access server cannot obtain an IP address from a DHCP server, you can
explicitly assign an IP address through the BOOTP Service. The BOOTP Service
enables the RAS Management Tool to act as a BOOTP server on the subnet.
Before you can use the BOOTP Service, you must obtain the following information
from your network administrator:
An IP address for your AWAN access server.
The subnet mask for your network. If a subnet mask is assigned to your AWAN
access server, it restricts access to users whose addresses belong to an acceptable
class of traffic. If you do not assign a subnet mask to your AWAN access server, one
is assigned based on the address class.
You also must determine the MAC address of your AWAN access server before you can
use the BOOTP Service. The MAC address is printed on the bottom of the AWAN
access server chassis.
To configure the BOOTP Service, choose Options from the RAS Management Tool
menu bar. Figure 5-3
shows the Options pull-down menu.
Note. Because IP address changes can be disruptive when using the RAS Management Tool,
Compaq recommends that you use an IP address with an infinite lease. You also should
configure your DHCP server to supply the subnet mask, gateway IP address, and domain
name service (DNS) server IP addresses.
Note. The BOOTP Service requires that the management workstation be connected to the
same subnet as the AWAN access server with no intervening routers.
Note. You can obtain unique IP addresses from the Network Information Center (NIC). Refer
to About This Manual
for information about contacting the NIC.
