General notes that apply to the ADD, ALTER, and INFO commands are discussed
below.
Notes About ADD
Commands
ADD commands define new names to DNS. The new name is added on the local
system only unless the name has a domain. If the name has a domain, it is added to
those systems in the domain. This applies to alias, composite, and group names, since
only these names may be replicated to other systems. If the new name is a duplicate of
an existing name, an error message is generated and the name is not added.
ADD commands permit the use of a LIKE parameter, which overrides creation values
established by SET commands and replaces them with corresponding values for some
other existing name (
name
). When you use the LIKE parameter, the existing name
must be the same kind of name (composite, domain, and so on) as the name you are
defining. The LIKE parameter has the following general form:
LIKE
name
[ UNDER
manager
] [
at-part
]
[ ON \
system
]
[ IN
subsystem
]
manager
is the name of a subsystem manager and must be specified if
name
is a
subsystem-object name that is not unique.
\
system
is a Guardian 90 system name that specifies where
name
is defined. The
system name can be omitted if
name
is unique.
subsystem
is the name of a subsystem. This item also can be omitted if
name
is
unique.
at-part
allows you to obtain a definition from a system or name manager other
than the current system or manager. See “Switching DNS Configurations” earlier
in this section for more details on
at-part
.
If the LIKE parameter is followed by an additional parameter in your command that
conflicts with the setting implied by LIKE, that additional parameter takes precedence.
“Using the LIKE Phrase to Copy Existing Definitions” in Section 4 provides more
details about using the LIKE parameter.
See the specific ADD or SET command descriptions in Section 7 for complete syntax
descriptions and examples of the LIKE parameter and
at-part
.
Notes About ALTER
Commands
ALTER commands permit the use of the AT \
system
and AT
manager
parameters.
When using AT \
system
, the system name is a Guardian 90 system name that
specifies the definition node for the name you are altering. Also, \
system
must be
the name’s definition node or the name must have been copied on that specified
system.
In general, to be able to alter a name on a system, the name must have been added
(ADD command) or copied (COPY command) on that system.
When a name has been copied, the domain attribute of the name cannot be altered.
