Distributed Name Service (DNS) Management Operations Manual
2 Introducing DNS Names
31258 Tandem Computers Incorporated 2–1
This section describes the DNS names that compose the DNS name database. DNS
names are defined and assigned to the objects that compose your systems, subsystems,
and networks. For the most part, this is done with the DNSCOM commands.
The concepts defined in this section should establish a basic understanding of the
names that DNS manages.
This section does not provide step-by-step procedures for creating and maintaining
the DNS database. Section 3 describes how to start DNS; Section 4 illustrates how to
define DNS names; and Sections 6 and 7 describe how to use DNSCOM commands.
As a system manager or operator, you are responsible for naming the objects that
compose your systems. By assigning names and attribute values to the objects that
compose your systems and networks, you define objects to DNS, that is, enter names
in the database. To organize objects, DNS lets you categorize DNS names by
classifying them by name types, collecting them into groups, and creating aliases for
complex names. The remainder of this section is an overview of the DNS names.
Command Object
Keywords
The DNS command object keywords listed below are used with DNSCOM commands
to create the DNS name database. There is one DNSCOM command object keyword
for each DNS name. The attributes that apply to these command objects appear in
Section 6.
