Figure 4-3. Dependencies and Relationships of SS Names
In an order-restricted relationship, a solid arrow line is used, and the
dependent name appears below the required name. Relationships shown
with dashed arrow lines are not order-restricted. The name from which
an arrow originates is specified in the definition of the name at the arrowhead.

Specific Characteristics for SS Names
Names selected for subsystems must have the following characteristics:
SS names must start with a letter and be composed of alphanumeric characters.
Embedded dash characters (-) can be used as separators.
SS names cannot exceed eight characters, and must be unique on each DNS
database where they are defined.
The OWNER attribute can be one to eight alphanumeric characters (case-
sensitive).
The SSNUM attribute is an integer and must be unique within OWNER.
Defining Subsystem-Object
Type Names
In DNS, the subsystem-object type (SSTYPE) is a template that clarifies the definition
of a subsystem object. All occurrences of a single subsystem-object type have the same
attributes from the point of view of the subsystem that defines the type. Each
subsystem-object type has a name. Examples of subsystem-object type names are LU
IN SNAX, LU IN SNAX2, and LINE IN AM6520.
If the SSTYPE definitions required at your site were not created at DNS initialization,
use the ADD SSTYPE command to create the necessary definitions. Figure 4-4
displays the relationships and dependencies of SSTYPE names in the DNS subsystem.
