There are two main phrases in logging:

Channels specify where the data is logged
•
Categories specify what kind of data (queries, updates, statistics, etc.) has to be
logged in specified channels
Standard channels are:

Standard categories are:

database

security
•
config

resolver

xfer-in
•
xfer-out
•
notify
•
client

unmatched

network

update

queries
•
dispatch

Each category of data can be sent to one or more channels. In Figure 4-1, queries are
logged to a file while statistics data is logged both to a file and to syslog.
