Audience
This manual is for system programmers, system managers, and operations personnel.
If you are a system manager or are in operations and perform template-related tasks
(such as creating, modifying, or installing templates), you should have these HP
manuals available for reference:
Distributed Systems Management (DSM) Manual
(for D-series users)
System Generation Manual for G-Series RVUs
SCF Reference Manual for the Kernel Subsystem
If you are a system programmer and are writing a subsystem or management
application of your own, you must know a programming language (such as COBOL,
TAL, or C), the Data Definition Language (DDL), and understand DSM in depth.
You should also refer to these HP manuals:
Data Definition Language Reference Manual

Manual Organization
Section/Appendix Describes
Section 1, Introduction
The functions of Template Services, the Template Services
components, and how the components work together.
Section 2, Display-Text
Procedures
The SPI_BUFFER_FORMAT procedures, custom-formatting
procedures, and the SPI_FORMAT_CLOSE_ procedure. The
SPI_BUFFER_FORMAT procedures enable you to list the
contents of a tokenized message, which is particularly useful
during debugging operations.
Section 3, Template
Language
Template source files and what you can specify in a template
source file by using the Template Language. Two important uses
of template source files are to create operator messages and to
specify token value substitutions.
Section 4, Template
Compiler
How to compile a template source file by using the Template
Compiler. The result is a template object file containing templates
that reflect both template source file and DDL information.
