About This Manual
MEDIACOM is an operator interface for labeled-tape operations. MEDIACOM is also
the operator interface to the Distributed Systems Management/Tape Catalog (DSM/TC)
system. You can run this interactive program from any node in the DSM/TC system.
When operating in a DSM/TC environment, the catalog entries in the DSM/TC
databases are automatically created, maintained, and deleted. However, there are
situations when you must manually add, revise, or delete a catalog entry. The
MEDIACOM commands give you the ability to perform these manual operations.
In addition, you can use the commands for these tasks:
Configuring DSM/TC
Labeling new tapes and cataloging them
Handling tape mount requests
Retrieving information from DSM/TC catalog entries
Managing the use of uncataloged tapes
Audience
This manual is intended for operators and system administrators with any or all of
these responsibilities:
Maintaining the integrity of the file and volume catalogs of DSM/TC
Cataloging tape files created by the BACKUP and BACKCOPY utilities
Recovering disk files from backup tapes
Managing the labeling and cataloging of tapes
Managing unlabeled tapes that are not cataloged in DSM/TC
Handling messages received from the tape server process, $ZSVR
Configuring the DSM/TC system
Configuring the control path to a tape library
You should be familiar with the tape server process, the NonStop Kernel operating
system, the NonStop Kernel disk and tape utility programs, and the HP NonStop
Transaction Management Facility (TMF).
Note. The operating system for HP NonStop systems, formerly called the Guardian operating
system, is now called the NonStop Kernel. This change reflects HP’s current and future
operating system enhancements that further enable open systems and application portability.
