ADD TAPELABEL Command (Super Group Only)
ADD TAPELABEL Command
(Super Group Only)
ADD TAPELABEL performs these operations on a tape:
Creates a standard ANSI tape label
Creates a standard IBM-MVS tape label
Creates a tape label used by BACKUP
Overwrites an existing label with new values (referred to as relabeling a tape)
Changes an unexpired labeled tape’s status to scratch
Automatically loads and unloads tapes to be labeled
The main purpose of ADD TAPELABEL is to initialize a never-used tape by creating a
label at the beginning of the tape. For information on the ANSI and IBM-MVS label
formats, see Appendix A, Tape Label Formats.
The ADD TAPELABEL command automatically loads a tape volume in the specified
tape drive if it resides in the tape library. If the UNLOAD ON option is set, the tape
volume is also unloaded automatically. For more information, see Considerations on
page 2-25.
tape-name
is the name of the tape as written in the tape label when you use a tape with an
existing label, or it is the name that goes in the tape label when you create a
labeled tape from an unlabeled tape. BACKUP and BACKCOPY accept numbers
and letters only for a tape name and do not accept special characters. For more
information, see Tape Names on page 1-9.
Note. ADD TAPELABEL is not intended for tapes used in a DSM/TC system. Therefore, do
not use tapes with ADD TAPELABEL that are already cataloged or that you want to catalog. To
perform labeling operations for tapes used in a DSM/TC system, use the LABEL
TAPEVOLUME command.
