Event Management Service
This appendix describes the Event Management Service (EMS) events generated by the
EM3270 subsystem. This section describes:
The overall strategy for EM3270 subsystem events.
The tokens used in EM3270 subsystem events.
The event messages reported by the EM3270 subsystem.
Event Reporting Strategy
The overall goal of EM3270 event reporting is to allow the EM3270 subsystem
administrator to monitor and control the operation of the subsystem. The EM3270
subsystem generates events under the following circumstances:
A significant change of state occurs in any EM3270 subsystem component.
A significant error or problem occurs. A hardware or software error occurs that
could cause data loss, loss of fault-tolerance, or prevent normal subsystem
operations.
Event Generators
Events are generated by the EM3270 emulator process. This process uses a collection of
common data communications routines that are capable of generating events as well.
See the Communications Management Programming Manual for more information.
Destination of Events
All EM3270 events are reported to EMS. Reporting to TMDS (Tandem Maintenance
and Diagnostic Subsystem) is not supported.
Compatibility Requirements
Previous versions of EM3270 supported logging of text messages to either of two
destinations, LOG1 and LOG2. LOG1 is now used to emit EMS format messages
suitable for a collector such as $0. LOG2 continues to emit text-format messages
suitable for a disk file, a printer, or the spooler file.
Critical Events
Events reported by the EM3270 subsystem are divided into two classes: critical and
noncritical. Critical events are those events that have serious or potentially serious
consequences. Noncritical events are usually normal or expected events, such as a
process being started.
To determine whether an event message reports a critical event, examine the value of the
event-message token ZEMS-TKN-EMPHASIS. If the value is ZSPI-VAL-TRUE, the
event being reported is considered critical. If the value is ZSPI-VAL-FALSE, then the
