Glossary
EBI. End bracket indicator for SNA.
EM3270 emulator. A software program that allows a Tandem terminal to emulate the
features of an IBM 3270 information display system or Fujtisu66xx systems.
EMCOM. The command interpreter that serves as the user interface to the EM3270
emulator.
EMS. Event Management Service.
ENSCRIBE. NonStop Kernel file manager.
FUP. File Utility Program.
IBM host. Any IBM 3270-compatible computer (not necessarily an IBM computer) that
serves as a 3270 host.
IMS. An IBM subsystem, information management system.
IN file. A file that serves as a source for command input.
Interactive mode. A mode of operation in which the user communicates directly with a
program through keyboard responses.
ITI protocol. A high-level 3270 protocol used by SNAX/XF to support line-at-a-time
communications with certain SNA 3270-type display stations.
IXF. Information transfer facility, part of the PCT product.
JIS. Japanese Industrial Standard.
Kanji. A graphic character set consisting of symbols used in Japanese ideographic alphabets.
Each character is represented by 2 bytes.
Katakana. A character set of symbols used in one of the two common Japanese phonetic
alphabets, which is used primarily to write foreign words phonetically.
Log files. Files used for reporting errors and changes in status.
LU. Logical Unit.
MBCS. Multiple-Byte Character Set.
MDT. Multiprogramming with a variable number of tasks.
MF. Modify Field Order.
Noninteractive mode. A mode of operation in which a user communicates indirectly with a
program through command files (IN files or OBEY files).
