Product Components and Operation
This manual describes the Tandem EM3270 emulator. The emulator runs on Tandem
NonStop systems to enable Tandem, IBM 3270, IBM 5250, and Fujitsu 66xx terminal
users to access IBM or Fujitsu host and Tandem applications. The term “Tandem
terminal” is used in this manual to refer to the 6526 terminal, the 653x family of
terminals, the TS530 terminal, and personal computers capable of emulating these
terminals with PCT and OV/TTE.
The EM3270 emulator and a Tandem, IBM, or Fujitsu terminal combine to emulate an
IBM 3270 or IBM 5250 information display system or Fujitsu 66xx terminal, depending
upon the host data stream. Given an acceptable terminal and either an IBM or Fujitsu
host, you can emulate either an IBM or Fujitsu terminal, respectively. The data stream
from the host determines the emulation type, IBM or Fujitsu. IBM can only send and
receive 3270 or 5250 data streams and Fujitsu can only send and receive Fujitsu data
streams. Using the Tandem EM3270 emulator, an IBM terminal can communicate with a
Fujitsu host, and a Fujitsu terminal can communicate with an IBM host. The EM3270
emulator supports simple passthrough of data between IBM terminals and hosts or
Fujitsu terminals and hosts.
Additionally, the EM3270 emulator serves as an IBM 328x printer emulator so that host
applications can access Tandem printers. Using IBM or Fujitsu terminals with the
EM3270 emulator, you can also display and print using Kanji characters.
You can configure the EM3270 emulator, shown in Figure 1-1, in a single-application
session with an IBM host application, in a dual-application session with the capability of
switching between a Tandem application and an IBM host application, or in a printer
session.
In a single-application session, the EM3270 emulator performs a data-stream translation
between the 3270 or Fujitsu 66xx format used by the host and the format used by the
Tandem, IBM, or Fujitsu terminal. The EM3270 emulator also maps the 3270 keyboard
functions onto the Tandem, IBM, or Fujitsu terminal keyboard.
In a dual-application session, you can switch between a Tandem and a 3270-type IBM
application at the touch of a key. When you select an IBM application, the EM3270
emulator performs the terminal data-stream translation and keyboard functions described
above. When you select the Tandem application, the Tandem, IBM, or Fujitsu terminal
operates as if the EM3270 emulator were not present, except for monitoring the hot key.
The only exception is when a Tandem terminal is used and the LINK parameter is set to
IBM3270. In this case, the Tandem-based 3270 application data stream is converted to a
6530 data stream by EM3270.
In a printer session, the EM3270 emulator emulates the IBM 328x family of printers to
provide local and remote printing support. The EM3270 emulator interprets printer
commands, de-blocks print data from the IBM host, and sends the results to a Tandem
printer, normally via the Tandem spooler process. With the EM3270 emulator, you can
use any printer directly addressable by the Tandem system, including those attached to
6526 or 653x terminals. The EM3270 emulator can support up to 50 devices per
process.
