options for each printer during configuration. See the SET TIMEOUT and SET
EOFTEXT command descriptions in Section 4 under “EM3270 Emulator Command
Set.” When the emulator detects an end-of-file, either as a defined character string or
through elapse of a specified time period during which no characters are received, it
closes the current file and opens a new file. This causes the spooler to queue the file for
printing.
The SET STARTFF and SET ENDFF commands control the form feed at the beginning
and end of a printer job, respectively.
Session termination consists of completing the logoff protocol, closing TR3271,
SNAX/XF, or SNAX/CDF, and closing the print file.
Log File Operations
The EM3270 emulator maintains a log of messages if you specify one or two log files
when you configure the emulator. The emulator writes status messages, error messages,
and warning messages to the log file or device. Use the SET LOG1 and SET LOG2
commands to supply the log-file names. Use the LOG1 and LOG2 commands to
reassign files or devices to logs. Use the SET PROCESS LOGOPENS ON command to
tell the EM3270 emulator to write a status message upon each successful host open. You
can enable this feature in a running process by using the ALTER PROCESS command.
Messages sent to LOG1 are in tokenized EMS format and are suitable for collectors
such as $0. Messages sent to LOG2 are in text format and are suitable to be sent to disk
files or to the spooler.
Appendix D, “EMCOM Messages,” lists messages that might be written to the log. Each
entry contains the date, time, process ID (the EM3270 emulator process), and a status,
error, or warning message. Examining logged messages is an important part of
troubleshooting emulator failures.
National Character Support
The EM3270 emulator provides support for the 8-bit language set used by the 107-key
keyboard.
When a Kanji terminal is accessing a Kanji host, the data is translated to and from an
intermediate character set. This intermediate character set is shifted JIS (Japanese
Industrial Standard).
Transliteration
TR3271, SNAX/CDF, SNAX/APN, and SNAX/XF perform character transliteration
from ASCII to EBCDIC and from EBCDIC to ASCII, as required. When international
character fonts are used, transliteration problems sometimes occur. You can specify the
ASCII-to-ASCII transliteration option, TRANSLAT, for the emulator to overcome this
problem. Customize the transliteration table to correct the incorrect characters. Refer to
Appendix C for more information about customizing the tables.
