File-Name Expansion
Most EMCOM commands involve a file name that is a symbolic identifier for a unique
disk file. The symbolic identifier for a disk file involves four parts, including:
\system name: Specific system within a network
$volume name: Physical disk pack on a drive
subvolume name: Name of a group of related files as set up by the user
disk file name: Unique file within the subvolume
The EM3270 emulator program expands a disk file name supplied by the user into a full
four-part symbolic file name by supplying default system, volume, and subvolume
names. Initially, default values for file-name expansion are supplied by TACL. You can
assign new default values using EMCOM’s SYSTEM and VOLUME commands.
EMCOM Commands
When configuring terminals and printers for an emulator session, some of the more
important commands that you should be familiar with include the following:
The SET, SHOW, and ASSUME commands set the emulator configuration, display
existing or default values, and switch the default keyword, respectively.
The HELP command provides EMCOM command syntax information.
The ADD command configures terminals and printers.
The RUN command starts up an interactive emulator session at the home terminal.
The EXIT command terminates an EMCOM session.
Example Single-Application Session
The simplest use of the emulator is to establish a session between a Tandem, IBM, or
Fujitsu terminal that runs TACL and an IBM host. A possible system configuration for
this example is shown in Figure 3-1. The example uses a subset of the available
EMCOM commands in interactive mode and assumes that the preliminary activities
have been performed.
