EM3270 Emulator Command Set
This section introduces the EM3270 emulator command set, discusses some of its basic
features, and defines each command in reference format for ease of use. Refer to the
“Notation Conventions” section at the front of the manual for an explanation of the
syntax presentation.
Basic Command Concepts
The following concepts that apply to most EMCOM commands are discussed before the
command reference section: automatic file-name expansion, the default keyword, and
the use of comments and task numbers.
File-Name Expansion
Most EMCOM commands use a file-name parameter that identifies a unique disk file.
The file name comprises four parts:
•
\system name: Specific system within a network
•
$volume name: Physical disk pack on a drive
•
subvolume name: Name of a group of related files as defined by the user
•
disk file name: Unique file within the subvolume
The emulator program expands the disk file name you supply to include default system,
volume, and subvolume names, if you do not specify them. Initially, default values for
file-name expansion are supplied by the NonStop Kernel command interpreter, TACL.
However, you can assign new default values using EMCOM’s SYSTEM and VOLUME
commands.
Default Keyword
Most commands you use to configure and control the system perform certain functions
for an emulator process and other functions for a device. For these commands, you
indicate to which item the set of functions and options applies by specifying a keyword,
either DEVICE or PROCESS. Commands that use these keywords are:
ADD DELETE RESET SHOW STATUS
ALTER INFO SET START STOP
If you omit the DEVICE or PROCESS keywords, a default value applies. Initially
DEVICE is the default keyword. You can change the default with an ASSUME
command or override it by specifying a device or process.
When the keyword is PROCESS, neither ADD nor DELETE performs any function.
For these commands, you must either specify DEVICE with a subdevice name or have
previously issued an ASSUME DEVICE command.
The simplest way to use the EMCOM commands is to type in an ASSUME PROCESS
command and configure and start the EM3270 emulator process. Then type in an
