EMS.
terminal equipment. This standard has been generally accepted in business equipment.
See also RS-232.
EMS. See Event Management Service (EMS).
end of text (EOT; ETX). Indicates the end of a message. If a message contains multiple
transmission blocks, ETX terminates the last block of the message. End-of-text block
(ETB) is used to terminate preceding blocks. The block check character (BCC) is sent
immediately following an ETX. ETX requires a reply indicating the receiving station’s
status. Used by byte-synchronous protocols to indicate the end of text, a variable-length
field of user data.
Envoy™. An access method that permits users to have links between a Compaq NonStop™
Himalaya Server and a variety of remote terminals and computers. The data links can
exist over leased or switched lines and can use asynchronous or byte-synchronous line
protocols.
Ethernet. A local area network (LAN) that uses the carrier sense multiple access with
collision detection (CSMA/CD) access method on a bus topology and is the basis for the
IEEE 802.3 standard.
Ethernet 4 ServerNet adapter (E4SA). A ServerNet adapter for Ethernet local area
networks (LANs) that contains four Ethernet ports.
Event Management Service (EMS). A part of DSM used to provide event collection, event
logging, and event distribution facilities. It provides for different event descriptions for
interactive and programmatic interfaces, lets an operator or application select specific
event-message data, and allows for flexible distribution of event messages within a
system or network. EMS has a Subsystem Programmatic Interface (SPI)-based
programmatic interface for both reporting and retrieving events.
event message. Text intended for a system operator that describes a change in some condition
in the system or network, whether minor or serious. The change of condition is called an
event. Events can be operational errors, notifications of limits exceeded, requests for
actions needed, and so on.
FCS. Frame-checking sequence. The field in a bit-synchronous frame that contains the
cyclical redundancy check (CRC) value for the frame, used to verify correct data. It is a
16-bit field, immediately preceding the ending flag for the frame.
full-duplex. A method of serial communications in which the data flow between two points
can occur in both directions simultaneously. This concept refers to the physical
capability of the line.
Global Customer Support Center (GCSC). A support organization that provides telephone
and remote diagnostic support for Compaq customers. There are GCSCs located all over
the world.
