Glossary-7
persistence.
PROCESS, and so forth. The object name uniquely identifies an object within the
system.
persistence. For the Subsystem Control Facility (SCF), the capability of a generic process to
restart automatically if it was stopped abnormally. You configure this capability by
specifying a nonzero AUTORESTART value in an ADD command.
point-to-point. A data-link configuration between two stations. This configuration may exist
between a primary and a secondary station or between two combined stations.
poll address. Specifies the address that must be transmitted by a multipoint supervisor station
to solicit data from a tributary station.
polling. The process used by the supervisor station to solicit data from the tributary stations.
The tributary station cannot send data until it is polled. See also continuous polling and
noncontinuous polling.
process. A module of a program or an entire program that has been submitted to the
operating system for execution (that is, it is an executing or running program).
processor. (1) A functional unit of a computer that reads program instructions, moves data
between processor memory and the input/output controllers, and performs arithmetic
operations. Processors are sometimes referred to as central processing units (CPUs), but
a NonStop™ Himalaya system has multiple cooperating processors rather than a single
CPU. (2) One or more computer chips, typically mounted on a logic board, that are
designed to perform data processing or to manage a particular aspect of computer
operations.
PROFILE object. A configurable object within the WAN subsystem SCF interface that
defines configuration modifiers that are used by the data communications subsystem
objects.
PTrace. A Compaq utility that can be used to selectively format and display trace data
generated when the SCF TRACE command is issued. The data can be interpreted and
used for troubleshooting.
RS-232. An industry standard for serial data transmission. It describes pin assignments (for a
25-pin connector), signal functions, and electrical characteristics. RS-232C is the current
standard.
RTS. Request to send. A signal from the host computer or terminal (DTE) to the modem
(DCE) requesting permission to transmit data. Permission is granted when the modem
turns CTS to ON.
SCF. See Subsystem Control Facility (SCF).
SCP. See Subsystem Control Point (SCP).
select address. Specifies the address that must be transmitted by a multipoint supervisor
station to send data to a multipoint tributary station.
