Exchange/RJE Manual
Appendix E Supplemental Information for
D-Series Systems
104698 Tandem Computers Incorporated E–1
D-series Exchange/RJE runs on Tandem’s D-series operating system and supports the
features in the D-series operating system.
This appendix provides specific information about the D-series Exchange/RJE product
relevant to the Exchange/RJE Manual.
For additional information on the D-series operating system please refer to the
following Tandem documents:

Overview of D-Series
Exchange/RJE
D-series Exchange/RJE has no new functionality other than the ability to
accommodate high PINs available with D-series system software.
Exchange/RJE screen displays that include PINs accommodate the longer PINs
allowed by the D-series operating system.
Compatibility and
Networking
Restrictions
D-series Exchange/RJE adheres to the rules and conventions that govern network
communication and compatibility between D-series software, C-series software, and
B-series software.
D-series Exchange/RJE runs on the C-series operating system as well as on the
D-series operating system. However, it cannot support high PINs when running on a
C-series system.
C-series Exchange/RJE can run on either C-series or D-series operating systems, but
cannot support the high PINs on the D-series system.
An error occurs when a process running at a high PIN attempts to communicate with a
C-series system and when a process running on a C-series system attempts to
communicate with a process running at a high PIN. (See “Error Message,” below.)
Starting High PINs D-series Exchange/RJE supports high PINs in D-series operating systems.
In D-series Exchange/RJE, the default setting of the BINDER HIGHPIN flag in the
object files is HIGHPIN OFF. As a result, new processes are automatically assigned to
run at a low PIN. In a network composed of both C-series systems and D-series
systems, you may wish to run new processes at low PINs to assure full compatibility
and networking freedom.
If the network is composed only of D-series systems, you may not need to be
concerned about networking restrictions due to PINs and might want to run processes
at high PINs.
To start a D-series Exchange/RJE process at a high PIN, set the BINDER HIGHPIN
flag in the Exchange/RJE object files to HIGHPIN ON.
