The PRIMARY or SECONDARY status of a system controls the behavior of
that system in the event that both the local and the remote system bid for the
line at the same time. A system that is designated SECONDARY waits three
seconds (typically) between bids for the line. The system that is designated
PRIMARY waits one second (typically) between bids for the line. If both a
SECONDARY and a PRIMARY system bid for the line at the same time, the
PRIMARY system bids again first, before the SECONDARY system. Thus, the
PRIMARY system gains control of the line and transmits first. The status of
the local system and the remote system should be complementary; both
systems should not have the same status.
!
specifies that, when using the CONNECT command to establish a connection with
an existing line server, the current values of the configuration parameters specified
in the command interpreter need not match the configuration parameters in effect
when the line server was started. The CONNECT ! command does change the
configuration parameters in the command interpreter (as displayed by the SHOW
command) to reflect the values used by the line server, except for the CPUS,
NONSTOP, LOGON, and PROGRAM parameters. Therefore, the values
displayed by the SHOW command for these parameters may not reflect the values
used by the line server.
If you omit this parameter and attempt to establish a connection with an existing
line server, the current configuration parameters (as specified in the RJECIR
command that started the command interpreter and subsequent SET commands)
must match the configuration parameters in effect when the line server was
started. If the configuration parameters do not match, the CONNECT command
fails and an error message is displayed.
If you specify this parameter and have not previously specified the name of an
existing line server (in the RJECIR command that started the command interpreter
or subsequent set commands), the CONNECT command fails and an error
message is displayed.
One or more blanks must separate the exclamation point (!) from CONNECT.
Line Activity The CONNECT command does not cause any line activity unless the DIAL parameter
or the LOGON parameter is used.
DIAL Parameter
The DIAL parameter causes the physical connection to be established between the
local system and the remote system over a switched data communications line. On a
nonswitched line, the physical connection between the two systems always exists.
The DIAL parameter does not send anything to the remote system, nor does it receive
anything from the remote system.
