CONNECT Command
Exchange/SNA Commands
3–8 104700 Tandem Computers Incorporated
After you have specified the required configuration parameters, use the CONNECT
command to start the new line server. The CONNECT command starts the line server
using the configuration parameters you have specified and establishes a connection
between the command interpreter and the line server. Additionally, a connection is
established between the line server and the host. If you have set the TRACE ON
parameter, you need to start the trace server, using the TRACE command, after you
enter the CONNECT command.
If you specified a name for the line server using the NAME parameter in either the
RJECIS command or a SET command, the line server is assigned that name.
Otherwise, the operating system assigns the line server a temporary process name. If
you do specify a name, that name must be unique among all process names on the
system where the line server is started.
Using CONNECT to Connect to an Existing Line Server
If you use the CONNECT command without the exclamation point to connect to an
existing line server, you must first specify the name of the line server in the NAME
parameter of the RJECIS command or the SET command. Additionally, the other
configuration parameters must match the configuration parameters in effect when the
specified line server was started. This means you must specify the configuration
parameters in the RJECIS command or in SET commands so that the parameters match
the configuration parameters that were specified when the line server was started.
You can use the SHOW command to see the current values of the configuration
parameters. For more information, see the SHOW command, later in this section.
Using CONNECT ! to Connect to an Existing Line Server
If you use the CONNECT command with the exclamation point to connect to an
existing line server, you must first specify the name of the line server in the NAME
parameter of the RJECIS command or the SET command. Aside from the NAME
parameter, the other configuration parameters do not need to match the configuration
parameters in effect when the line server was started.
The configuration parameters in effect when the line server was started are used for all
operations using that line server. For example, if the line server was started with
TRANSPARENT ON, all data is sent as transparent data, regardless of how
TRANSPARENT is set in the command interpreter when the connection is established.
The CONNECT ! command does change the configuration parameters in the
command interpreter (as displayed by the SHOW command) to reflect the values used
by the line server, except for the COMMAND, CPU, LOGON, LOGOFF, and
PROGRAM configuration parameters. Thus, the values of these configuration
parameters as displayed by the SHOW command may not reflect the values used by
the line server. (The COMMAND configuration parameter controls the operation of
the command interpreter and does not affect the operation of the line server.)
