Common Network Topologies

The star, tree, ring, bus, and mesh topologies are illustrated in Figure 3-4. A mixed
topology is a combination of more than one type of topology. The split-star and tri-star
topologies are extensions of the star topology.
Star Topology
In a star topology, all systems join at a central node, creating a star-shaped
configuration. Because all nodes are connected through the central node, a star
network’s reliability depends on the central node; if the central node fails, the entire
network fails.
