Glossary
ADAPTER object. A configurable object within the Subsystem Control Facility (SCF)
interface that represents a Fibre Channel ServerNet adapter (FCSA).
adapter. See also server.
attribute. (1) For the Subsystem Control Facility (SCF), a characteristic of an entity. For
example, two attributes of a process might be its program file and its user ID.
backup processor. A processor running the HP NonStop Kernel operating system that
communicates with the primary processor, allowing the processors to remain
independent. A component failure in one processor has no effect on any other
processor.
board. A frame on which computer circuitry is mounted.
command. A demand for action by or information from a subsystem or the operation
demanded by an operator or application. A command is typically conveyed as an
interprocess message from an application to a subsystem.
configuration. (1) The arrangement of enclosures, system components, and peripheral
devices into a working unit. (2) The definition or alteration of characteristics of an
object.
direct connect. Connection from the FCSA to the ESS without going through an FC switch.
download. The process of loading software into a device.
enclosure. Similar to a cabinet in NonStop K-series systems. An enclosure can contain
components of a system or a peripheral, such as a card cage, a backplane, a disk
drive, or a fan. Base enclosures are placed on the floor and can have other enclosures
stacked on top of them. Stackable enclosures can be place on top of other enclosures.
Enterprise Storage System (ESS). A disk array or a collection of magnetic disks, their
controllers, and the disk cache in a standalone cabinet or cabinets. These disks are
configured by an attached console and presented to the attached server as logical
volumes that can be a fraction of a physical volume or can span volumes.
error. A condition encountered when performing a command or other operation that causes
the command or operation to fail.
ESS. See Enterprise Storage System (ESS).
Ethernet. A local area network (LAN) that uses the carrier sense multiple access with
collision detection (CSMA/CD) access method on a bus topology and is the basis for
the IEEE 802.3 standard. The Ethernet data transfer rate is typically
10 Megabits/second (Mbps).
