Understanding Flow Map PC Diagrams
Flow Map PC
4–2 098935 Tandem Computers Incorporated
Figure 4-1 shows how Flow Map PC represents objects. In general, ellipses represent
process objects, sectioned cylinders represent file objects, and lines with arrows show
the message flow among process and file objects. In the figure, TCP and the two
servers are single processes, Disk Processes is a process group, Database is a file
group, and Log File is a single file. The arrows connecting objects show which way
data flows among objects on the diagram. Arrows are always directed from requester
to server or from file opener to file.

Processes and files are considered objects. The objects and connections in a flow
diagram contain the performance data collected from FMH. The performance data for
grouped objects and their connections is the total of the data for all objects in the
group. You can display the performance data for any object or connection by double-
clicking on the symbol for an object or connection. If you wish, you can display one
selected performance data item with each object directly on the diagram.
You can manipulate Flow Map diagrams by:
Rearranging objects
Grouping or ungrouping objects
Displaying performance data for an object
Displaying performance data for an object-to-object data flow and printing it in a
report
Highlighting all objects on connection paths to a selected object from all other
objects
Highlighting all objects on connection paths from a selected object to all other
objects
