Safeguard Password Enhancements (G06.31)
In addition, the following attributes are introduced:
Migration Considerations
Users migrating to a version of Safeguard and Standard Security that supports longer
passwords should be aware that the default setting for the new
PASSWORD-COMPATIBILITY-MODE attribute is ON, meaning that new passwords
are limited to 8 bytes. To enable the longer password feature,
PASSWORD-COMPATIBILITY-MODE must be set to OFF, and the existing
PASSWORD-MAXIMUM-LENGTH attribute must be set to a value greater than 8.
For more information on these and other attribute changes, see the
Safeguard
Administrators Manual
.
There are no migration considerations specific to the quality password feature.
However, you can use the mitigation procedure described under Migration
Considerations on page 2-18 to handle any unexpected failures that might occur during
migration. This procedure preserves the user or password database that is necessary
to restore the original system user or alias database.
Fallback Considerations
From the G06.31 RVU, you can fall back to the G06.29 or G06.30 RVU. However,
longer passwords and embedded spaces in passwords are not supported in pre-
G06.31 RVUs. Any user with a password that exceeds 8 characters or contains
embedded spaces will be unable to login after fallback.
Considerations for falling back to G06.30 are:
The super ID password must not exceed 8 characters and must not contain
embedded blanks. If these conditions are not met, the super ID password must be
changed accordingly; otherwise, the super ID will be unable to logon after falling
back.
If the PASSWORD-MINIMUM-LENGTH attribute value exceeds 8, the system
administrator must change it to a value less than 8 using SAFECOM in a
Safeguard environment or PWCONFIG in a Standard Security environment.
Before falling back, users whose password exceeds 8 characters in length or
contains embedded spaces must request the system administrator to change their
password to a length less than or equal to 8 characters and to remove embedded
spaces.
