Running GPA
This section begins with an overview of the procedure for running GPA, followed by
detailed information about the procedure. We strongly recommend that you read through
the overview section before you attempt to install or run GPA for the first time.
Note that using GPA also involves the use of the Tandem Measure performance-
monitoring product. The GPA procedure in this section includes the required steps for
using Measure in conjunction with GPA. However, since the procedure does not cover
all operating contingencies, you should refer to the Measure User’s Guide as necessary.
An Overview of the GPA Procedure
To use GPA, you do the following:
Use Measure to collect system performance data.
Determine the period of busiest system use from the data collected by Measure. This
is the period of use for which you want to tune the system.
Run GPA to analyze the data collected by Measure.
Tune the system according to the GPA recommendations.
The items above summarize the GPA procedure, which actually consists of eight major
steps as shown in Figure 2-1
. The following paragraphs state briefly the purpose of each
step and specify what you need to keep in mind in each case.
Establishing the Measurement Period
The purpose of this step is to establish the length of the following two time periods for
running Measure:
The measurement window: This is the total duration of a single Measure run that
collects performance data for the system.
The data collection interval: This is the length of each time period within the
measurement window for which Measure collects and reports the data. For example,
